Why is Mercilon
prescribed? Mercilon contains the female hormones estrogen and progesterone that act to prevent ovulation—the release of an egg from the ovary.
The hormones also lead to changes in the mucus of the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to enter into the uterus. In addition, they cause changes in the lining of the uterus, lowering the chances that an embryo will attach to the uterus and develop into a baby. When taken correctly, pills like Mercilon are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Keep in mind, however, that they do not offer protection against AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases.
